About Me:
After years of working oddball jobs in search of the proper subject to study, I found myself knowing a little about a lot. That's why Geography has been great for me. I got my MA last August, and now I'm working on a PhD. For those who are unsure, Physical Geography is the study of Earth's natural systems, and how they change through space and time. Sounds pretty neat, huh! I've recently found my focus - I'm going to write my dissertation on how to remediate urban soil problems so that people can grow their own food. Urban gardening is taking off, but it seems like no one is stopping to think about all the pollution that has been settling on these soils for decades. My ultimate goal is to offer soil testing and remediation as part of a service to help people create a healthy, self-sustaining living environment. I would love to help people help themselves, especially the children. Let's teach our kids to garden!
On the way to finding geography, I worked in a number of seemingly unrelated jobs. For instance, I was the head lab tech at a chemical company that made environmentally friendly chemicals to treat oil wells to increase their efficiency. Another job was working with ColorSounds Foundation, which is a non-profit created to teach children language with color and music. We were using the foundation as a vehicle to help the Austin Music Network and to get the Texas Music Museum get started, but that's another story…
I also found myself working at the Texas Nurses Association and Foundation for several years while I was getting my BS at Texas State. I was the AA for the Director of Practice. She was going through an awakening, a transformation while I was with her, and she taught me many lessons about health and life. I learned about how the western medical world operates in all its dysfunctionality. The oddest part of that job was that I was in charge of building a library of information for all of Texas for possible terrorist response. TNA was (is?) part of a coalition of state entities that were working on being prepared in case of a terrorist attack. My job was to have literature available on how to deal with any kind of health issue (i.e. all bioterrorist or chemical attacks, nuclear, etc.) in case power was down. That was a pretty horrible reality check, but I suppose I might need that information one day.
All the while I held these jobs I was living with a rock star. I met many famous actors, musicians, movie makers (Roman Polanski - egad!) and the likes. It felt like I had two realities - the working girl struggling through school and the rock star girlfriend who would occasionally get to tour with a rock band or travel to Europe for a show. That was a pretty dramatic time in my life, and I'm still processing many of those memories.
Currently, I am a doctoral student at KU. My wonderful husband stays home with the kids in the day and attends school for Energy Healing and Massage Therapy in the evenings. We love our life together. We recently met a friend who is also on Gaia that has shown us what great things we can do. I wake up every day excited about what lessons and opportunities will come. Something our Gaia friend said really resonates with me - we need to listen to the children….we can guide them by teaching them healing, gardening, massage, any number of wonderful things…but in the end, we need to listen to them because they are the most connected and open of us all. We can teach them to be our teachers.
I'm adding this stuff here, since I'm not sure where it fits in. I was recently awarded the position of President of the Non-Traditional Student's Foundation here at KU. It's been a very rewarding position. There has been a great outreach to non-trads by other groups wishing to help a large community of people. For instance, I will be working with the student veterans group to propose a resource center for veterans and their families on campus. I love helping people, and this position has surprised me in the opportunities I have to do so.
